Vismo Equipped Imo Boddy's World Record-Breaking UK Three Peaks Challenge with Satellite Communication Devices

JOGLE (John O’Groats to Land’s End) World Record Holder and ultra runner Imo Boddy broke the women’s world record for the Three Peaks Challenge, set in 1979 by Olympian Ann Sayer.

Her endeavour, co-sponsored by Vismo, involved climbing and running between the UK’s highest mountains - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddf (Snowdon), a distance of 423 miles or 680 kms, starting on 15th May, in under seven days, 31 minutes. She did it in six days, five hours and 43 minutes.

"Congratulations to Imo for becoming the world's fastest female to climb and run between the National Three Peaks” said Colin Dale, Vismo Global Sales Director. “Imo's inspirational and remarkable achievement is a testament to her exceptional strength, perseverance, and dedication.” Addressing Imo directly, he added, “The team at Vismo applauds you for your outstanding accomplishment."

Global tracking specialist Vismo also loaned Imo the satellite equipment required to track her location. via Used with Map Share, it allowed friends and relatives to monitor where she was giving Imo her precise location from when she set off from Fort William, Scotland, to her end destination, Caernarfon in Wales.

The devices also enabled Vismo to know her location via the Vismo Secure Portal, and share that information with her coach and support team.

Yorkshire-raised Imo became the youngest known female to run the length of Britain in 2022, running 40 miles (60 kms) a day for 22 days from John O’Groats to Land’s End, a total of 833 miles or 1340 kms. And in 2021 she ran seven marathons in seven days to raise awareness of mental health for the mental health charity MIND.

Her latest extreme endurance challenge tested not only physical stamina but also mental fortitude, with Imo navigating some of the most demanding landscapes under variable weather conditions.

“Setting a new benchmark”

Before she set off, she said, "Trying to break the Three Peaks record is more than a personal goal. It’s about setting a new benchmark in endurance sports and inspiring other young women to push their limits. “I count myself incredibly lucky to have an extended family who support me no matter what and truly believe I am capable of this challenge.”

Vismo’s equipment and tracking capabilities are not new to challenges faced in environments where phone signals are weak or non-existent. They have previously been deployed for explorer Levison Wood for his 4,250 mile (6840 km) trek along the Nile in 2013, and across the Himalayas in 2015-16; the 4000 mile (6500 km) Amazon River Run - an expedition by kayak in 2015; and for a research expedition to a volcano in Tanzania in 2019, where the Vismo App and a satellite tracker were used by UCL’s Kate Laxon.

“We wished Imo all the best for her attempt on the 45-year old record and are very pleased to be helping her technically and with sponsorship,” said Dale, himself an outdoor sports enthusiast, before her challenge. “The Garmin devices are robust and extremely reliable under any running and climbing conditions.”

Inspiring Girls International

Imo supported the charity Inspiring Girls International, which aims to raise awareness of female role models beyond traditional sectors. “Recent studies have revealed that young girls draw significant inspiration from sporting heroes.  Our goal with this challenge is to expand their horizons and showcase a diverse range of role models,” she said.
